Los Angeles NightClubsA.D.
It's been through more than a few transformations, but A.D., formerly known as The Playroom (and Probe before that), continues to be a raging venue no matter what it's called each month. Its latest incarnation is a medieval cathedral, complete with bartenders in Catholic uniforms and stained-glass windows. Popular promoters about town including Bryan Rabin (who runs the long-running rockin' gay/straight dance club called Cherry) and Brent Bolthouse hold court here on Friday and Saturday, respectively. 836 N. Highland Ave., Los Angeles, CA BlueBlue looks like a futuristic Disneyland Haunted Mansion and has theme nights featuring goth, techno/trance, hip hop/funk, trance/house, "dark wave"/alternative, and an alterno-gothic S&M night respectively. Full-service restaurant and occasional after-hours (2 AM-5 AM) parties. 1642 Las Palmas Ave., Los Angeles, CA Big Foot LodgeA relative newcomer in the up-and-coming Atwater Village neighborhood just east of Los Feliz, the Big Foot Lodge has a cheeky outdoors theme, with a life-size, moving Smokey the Bear and wood paneling, but the twentysomething clientele tends toward the rock and rockabilly set. Different DJs each night offer sounds from '80s metal to '60s French pop. The last Thursday of the month is a '60s and '70s bubblegum/punk/psychedelic/power pop dance night. Try the "Toasted Marshmallow," a creamy drink topped with a flaming marshmallow. 3172 Los Feliz Blvd, Los Angeles, CA CinegrillCinegrill is well worth a visit, not only to hear top-tier cabaret and jazz vocalists, but also to admire the many Hollywood artifacts lining the lobby of the landmark hotel that houses it. 7000 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, Los Angeles, CA DeepWith private party rooms, a scantily clad crowd, and some see-through walls, Deep is one of the sexiest clubs in Tinseltown. The exclusive dance club has DJs spinning everything from techno to old school to current dance hits, plus grindingly good go-go dancers. 1707 N. Vine St., Los Angeles, CA FactoryFactory churns out the dance music: Wednesday is the mixed flashback "That '80s Night"; Friday, the lesbian night "Girl Bar"; and in the adjoining Ultra Suede (661 N. Robertson Blvd., West Hollywood), '80s/'90s pop on Wednesday and Friday. Saturday, the two houses combine for an event called "The Factory," except the first Saturday of the month, when Ultra Suede hosts a gay Asian night. 652 La Peer Dr., West Hollywood, CA Key ClubThis popular Sunset Strip venue wins raves from local press for being the best place to hear live music in LA. With its state-of-the-art sound system, 9039 Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood. LushLush calls its Friday an Saturday dance nights "Disco Inferno" and "Saturday Night Fever". There's no cover, and you can recharge with food from the cantina. Live alternative rock plays three nights a week, too. 2020 Wilshire Blvd, Santa Monica, CA NacionalThe theme may be 1950s Havana, but be forewarned that the door policy is not exactly open to all (it helps to know someone). If you do get in, a DJ creates the sounds while you sip a mojito, dance the salsa or just groove to the beat. It's the place to dance on Tuesday night. 1645 Wilcox Ave., Hollywood. RageRage is a longtime favorite of the "gym boy" set, with DJs following a different musical theme every night of the week (alternative rock, house, dance remixes, etc.), and a restaurant serving straightforward fare. 8911 Santa Monica Blvd, West Hollywood, CA The RoomDark and sequestered, The Room promises some of the town's hottest DJs every night. The accent is on hip hop and the like, but Thursday-Saturday, anything is fair game. Enter on the alley. Come at 10, stay 'til 2, pay nothing (except for drinks). 1626 N. Cahuenga Blvd, Los Angeles, CA VoodooWith giant tiki heads, a waterfall, and swanky VIP rooms, Voodoo is a colorful, over-the-top nightspot in a suprisingly low-key, out-of-the-way neighborhood. Clubsters make the trek out of Hollywood for the well-known promoters who take over (usually on weekends) and stellar (techno, trance, house) DJ lineups they bring in. 4120 W. Olympic Blvd, Los Angeles, CA Whisky A Go-Go
The birthplace of go-go dancing in the 1960s is now a Sunset Strip icon for rock aficionados who love live bands - as many as six play here on any given weekend night. Jim Morrison and the Doors was once the house band here; now, new and emerging artists entertain along with famous ones. 8901 Sunset Blvd. at San Vicente Blvd., Hollywood. |
